Doldrums
I’m guessing these are sort of the Winter doldrums for me. I have perhaps delayed them with exercise. But after doing my first-ever 13.1 mile training run last week, I rationally took a longer number of days off than usual. Then when I ran again on Monday, it was unusually hard to get through 6 miles (plus a one-mile walk). I skipped yesterday and ran 7 today and it was still tough.  So I...

Bad Thought Catalog: The Vanishing Valley →
badthoughtcatalog: A year ago I weighed 285 pounds. I now weigh 205. Many things have changed on my body since I began exercising, eating right and losing weight, particularly my navel. I’ve always had a fairly deep “innie.” I used to think it was strange. My cousins, redneck boys who ran around all Summer growing… I am amazed this didn’t happen sooner.

Ow. My brain.
How did I once blog about crime for 14 hours straight?  Oh, right: Adderall.  Seriously, though, blogging about news stuff is a muscle and I haven’t flexed it in a while. I’m not complaining, I like having the work—a lot. But I can feel the gears slip and grind, still, sometimes. That’s why I resurrected this as a place to practice. And you know, whenever I do feel like...

I love the trails by my house. I started walking them back when I was a great big fat person, did all my early runs on them and still get on them a few times a week. They’re authentically wild, though, the kind of woodland trails that would disappear within months if the parks department stopped maintaining them. That means there are hazards for a tired runner (in addition to copperhead...

Hey Guys, it's Steve Huff's News Blog! →
Something I’ve realized since I began blogging for the Observer again is blogging about news/entertainment/stuff that happens in the world is a reflex. At least for me. I have intellectual muscles I haven’t flexed in a while (my first weekend blogging for the NY paper was tough—it was a very, very slow news cycle and I was also working into the mindset) and just as I had to get...

jendenbrat replied to your quote: Authorities have identified the man whose head,… True crime is intriguing, but I can only handle so much. shorterexcerpts replied to your post: Dang Is there any decent rule/guideline for how many miles before a gel or some other form of caloric boost is needed? Dang
I ran 11.19 miles this morning. Not that bad for a great big fat person.  Okay, I’m not fat anymore but I still think of myself that way.  I’ve noticed when I run more than 8 miles or so my body starts doing odd stuff it doesn’t do at lower mileage: cramping sensations, stomach acts up (just a little), vision gets blurred here and there. You’d think all this is scary but...

Honestly, kind of a blah meme.  I’m 6’0” but as I’ve noted here before, no one believes that until they stand beside me.
